A Survey through Psalm 33: When Fear Comes Knocking, Turn Up the Music

by Teresa(1,344) Bronze Star

"Rejoice in the LORD, O you righteous! For praise from the upright is beautiful! Praise the Lord with the harp; Make melody to Him with an instrument of ten strings. Sing to Him a new song; Play skillfully with a shout of joy." Psalm 33:1 -3

We are in a time of uncertainty which is bringing fear and depression to new heights--even among Christians, especially in the western parts of the world, namely, America.

For the most part, we live in comfort and security--we say we trust God and we do. Unfortunately, many of us are beginning to realize that we also trusted in our careers and our homes. Now that these things are being stripped away, we are forced to make a radical change in lifestyle. Fear and depression have come knocking at our door.

As Christians, how should we respond? Do we follow the path to despair, or do we rise up and remember the mighty works of our Almighty God?

I have been thinking a lot about music lately, and how comforting certain kinds are to my spirit. This led me to consider the story of King Saul and David.  David was sent to play the harp in the presence of the king. The Bible tells us that whenever David played, the soul of King Saul was comforted. (1 Sam 16:14 -23)

The distressing spirit came upon the King because of his disobedience to God.  Although his depression was a direct result from sin, the underlying reason was due to lack of trust in the word of God.  This is true for us.  We begin to let our circumstances cloud our vision making it difficult to remember the power of our God, which leads to decisions that might not align with God's will for his children.

Let's continue on in Psalm 33.

"By the word of the Lord the heavens were made. And all the host of them by the breath of His mouth. He gathers the waters of the sea together as a heap. He lays up the deep storehouses." Verses 6-7

King David tells us to sing praises to the Lord; with instruments and/or our voice because God is worthy of our praise. He reminds us that God spoke all things into existence. He alone commands and creation responds.  How is it that we can come to a place of fear and doubt? Perhaps it's because we lose sight of this truth.

When fear and depression come knocking at your door, don't answer it, instead; turn up the music!

"The counsel of the LORD stands forever. The plans of His heart to all generations. Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD. The people He has chosen as His own inheritance" Verses 11-12

As Americans, we may not reside in a nation who has made God their Lord. However, as Christians, we are strangers in this land and our citizenship is in heaven, therefore we are the chosen and we are His inheritance.

So when fear and depression come knocking at your door, don't answer it, instead; turn up the music!

"Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear Him, on those who hope in His mercy, to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine" Verses 18-19

We shouldn't fear what we see, or let our mind wander. We should trust in the God of creation--taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. He is more than able to handle anything that comes our way if we would take the time to seek His face for wisdom.

Join me in this proclamation of faith--do you really believe it? Make it yours today!

"Our soul waits for the LORD; He is our help and our shield. For our heart shall rejoice in Him, because we have trusted in His holy name."  Verses 20-21

Praise the Lord!

Praise God in His sanctuary;
Praise Him in His mighty firmament!
Praise Him for His mighty acts;
Praise Him according to His excellent greatness!

Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet;
Praise Him with the lute and harp!
Praise Him with the timbrel and dance;
Praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes!

Praise Him with loud cymbals;
Praise Him with clashing cymbals!

Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.

Praise the Lord.

Psalm 150

Turn up the music!!

This reminds me of my 4 month old son. He loves music and he loves it loud. If he is fussy it calms him down. He just sits there and feels the bass. It can be stressful not being able to vocalize your needs or fears as an infant. And sometimes I feel the same way. Feeling helpless and unable to really communicate or understand what it is that I need. Music can drownd out everything else in my head and help me focus on the only thing that matters Gods voice and his direction and total control.

Hi Abbey,

You are so right.  I remember how music would calm my kids. I just love to see children dance to the music.  Their faces glow! I wonder if our faces would glow if we danced before our God a little more often.

Blessings to you!

Teresa
