We Are Living In a Graveyard Unless…..

by Swapna Nanda

Imagine yourself living in a graveyard and buried inside a tomb day and night. It would be suffocating. Isn’t it frightening?

You and I may call our selves as modern, civilized, belonging to an elite society, but until and unless we go through a certain experience (which varies from person to person and is very personal) we cannot assert that we are safe and secure and truly liberated in this world. Rather, we are lifeless and bound inside the grave.

The book of Ephesians from the Bible talks about the serious condition of man in this world which is very subtly ignored. In spite of the progress in science, technology and even as man has been able to reach the moon, Ephesians 2: 1-6 gives a picture of the dark and real condition of human beings in this world:

“As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of the world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of the sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. But , because of his great love for us, God who is rich in mercy made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved . And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus.”…NIV

In this passage, we see a very distressing and depressing situation of human beings diseased with transgressions and sins. Let us take a look.

1. First things that hits us is that those who are in transgression, they are actually dead people. One may be physically able and active yet spiritually dead in transgression.

2. Secondly, when one is spiritually dead, he or she follows the ways of the world and the ruler of the air. What does following the ways of the world mean? It is having all the Godless values, immorality, by-passing Godly standards and agreeing with anything and everything that inspires and instigates against glorifying God.

3. Thirdly, this spirit of darkness that kills people spiritually actually invades them and works in and through them. It uses those hearts which are hardened and makes them to remain ever disobedient towards God and His Laws.

4. Fourthly, those who are spiritually dead live as gratifying the desires and cravings of the sinful nature.

5. As a result, one becomes by nature the object of wrath of God.

6. These are some of the characteristics of dead people. You and I could be one among them. Dead people’s corpses are buried in the cemetery. A dead person cannot move himself nor do any actions by himself, because he is depraved of life. Similarly, a life in transgression and sin is like being dead, completely detached from life, light, Godly values, God’s presence, and totally cut off from the peace of God. The worst part in all these is that through all these actions, one becomes the object of God’s wrath. Every person who does not care about living in a cemetery and being spiritually depraved and dead are actually bringing the wrath of God upon themselves. This is very sad and dangerous. Because of the depravity people may compromise with the ways of the world, but ultimately there is wrath. Being the target of God is worse than being targeted by any terrorist group. God cannot ignore sin and because He is Holy, His nature demands that’s He takes action against it. Yet, His character also is Love and so He paved the way to be saved from spiritual death. The only Way is found in Jesus Christ.

SO, you and I could be among the dead people living in the world of graveyard, until and unless we have allowed ourselves to be raised from the dead. This is possible only through Jesus Christ. More than 2000 years ago, on a certain day as the Jews were about to celebrate their routine Passover feast, God actually placed the chosen Lamb of God to be sacrificed on the Cross so that through His blood we will be saved. Today those who are washed by this blood are raised from the dead and the cemetery of this world. Therefore, bearing the blood stain of Christ is very vital in order to escape the wrath of God in the coming days.

This Easter, let us allow ourselves to be truly raised from the death of transgression and sin, or else, the resurrection story of Jesus Christ will just remain useless news for the present world.

Be raised from the dead and leave the grave yard because through Jesus there is Life and forgiveness of sins.

What a wonderful way of bringing the truth out of those passages, Swapna. God has truly given us the greatest gift in human history, our redemption from spiritual death and the grave. The only way to please God is to be in Christ, and in Him we are seated in the heavenlies! Praise God! Thank you for sharing the gift the Lord Jesus has given you.

Hello Swapna, I really liked your definition of "death", and without the Spirit there is NO life! And as Romans 8:28-30 explains our LORD who loves us so much touches us and brings us into His righteousness. What a promise, what joy and what hope we have in our LORD

Hello Swapna,

I am sorry that I didn't read your article before Easter, however, it has the same impact after Easter. No matter the season, the truth remains the same. We are dead without Christ. Thank you so much for your insightful article. Blessings to you and your husband as you serve our Lord at India.
