Like a Little Girl

by Marijo Phelps(199) Red Star

Like a Little Girl
She was going to see her family,
Her mom, her sister and her dad, once again
Happy, happy was she!
Her Mom's birthday was coming
And she wanted to take Mom some flowers.

She knew where there was a flower place nearby,
Where she could pick them up
Just before she went home
And she planned.
Sixty cents in her little purse
And that was not enough
But her friends gave her
Two cents along the way.

She walked along
Her purse clutched
In her fist deep inside her pocket.
Happy, happy, it was finally spring.

She got there and walked around.
Lost for awhile,
Then saw two people.
Shyly, she asked "Are they closed for selling flowers?"
The lady said to wait a half hour.
She said she'd come back later.

She walked and breathed
And shook her hair in the sun.
She could almost smell the carnations.
One vibrant red, one milky white
And the other peppermint striped.

What would her Mom say?
Oh, happy, happy, it was spring!

And she walked around until the time was gone,
Shyly looking down when anyone passed.
And then, she went back to the flower place.
She waited in a dark hall,
A lady went in the door.

She walked up to the door and hesitated.
Then grasped the knob and turned it slowly.
She hesitated again and walked in.
The lady didn't hear her
So she asked "Are you open yet?"

The lady said "Not for 10 minutes"
"Do you want cut flowers?"

"Oh, yes!" she smiled.
"Well, then you won't have to wait
Because we haven't any left today."

"oh" the voice was little as she left.
Happy? Happy? It was spring once for me today
But now that seems like yesterday
And should have been,
For she was me
And for awhile I was her again.
Exodus 20:12
"Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you. (NIV)
