Psalm 61:1-4 - I Will Trust in the Shelter of Your Wings

by Teresa(1,349) Bronze Star
Freelance writer/Speaker

Hear my cry, O Lord attend to my prayer from the ends of the earth I will cry to You. When my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For You have been a shelter for me and a strong tower from the enemy. I will abide in Your tabernacle forever; I will trust in the shelter of Your wings" Psalm 61: 1-4

Do you feel overwhelmed by your circumstances? Has it caused you to doubt God's love for you? This happens to a lot of us at one time or another; if we are honest, it happens quite frequently. It may come as a surprise to some, but Jesus promised, that's right promised, that in this world we would have tribulation (John16:33). The good news is, He didn't stop there. He went on to say "But be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."

So why is it that sometimes we are so quick to wonder why things are happening to us?  For me, it happens when I take my eyes off Jesus and focus on my situation, which causes me to forget my heavenly Father is waiting for me to cry out in honesty before Him - just as David did in this Psalm.

Having confidence and joy in the Lord, doesn't mean we are to live in denial of our circumstances, rather, it is recognizing that we can take everything to the Lord and that He is more than willing, and the only one who is able to help us through with lasting results. Peter said it well:

"Casting all of your cares upon Him, for He cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7)

We might as well be honest with Him because He knows what we are thinking anyway.

"I will abide in Your tabernacle forever; I will trust in the shelter of Your wings" (VS 4)

Unfortunately, running to God isn't usually our first choice; instead, we look to the world for answers and comfort. We buy into these answers against our better judgment, but we want the quick answer and frankly, sometimes God just takes too long.

However, true peace and freedom only happens when we come to the place where we are willing to say, "I will trust in the shelter of Your wings"

Even so, what does this mean? It means reading His word. It means surrendering your will to His. It means surrounding yourself with strong Christians who will endure with you, and it means you are going to make a commitment to believe God when He says He will take care of you and you will wait it out - knowing the storm will end, knowing you will be a stronger and healthier person for it.

Taking these few steps will cause your heart to rejoice and before you know it, the doubt and fear will melt away and your confidence in the Almighty God will be restored.

YES! VERY good balance here. Why does it take us awhile to realize that to be in the shelter of His arms we have to be close to Him, quit wiggling and learn to REST so He can give while we receive! Marijo

Hi Marijo, I think it takes so long because our nature is to want to think we can get through this life on our own, we forget that as Christians our life is not our own. We have been crucified in Christ and it is no longer us who lives but Christ through us. Freedom from toil comes when we remember that and allow God to do the work and we tuck ourselves under the shelter of his wings instead of trying to flap our feeble ones.

You are an inspiration.           On Friday night, at 11 30, I lit a prayer candle and prayed to the spirit world. I asked Easter Lily Fryer, a beloved, baby-nurse to help me. She was a loving black woman who had cared for my babies years ago while I was at work. She succumbed to breast cancer some fifteen years ago. I fervently pleaded with this life-long devout Christian to send me Jesus, the Christ. I reminded her that she had known about Christ all her life as a Christian. I had only recently accepted his spiritual possibility, on faith, and only in recent years -- by virtue of the power of his name to dispel unseen evil ones. But that's another story.

The following Sunday afternoon was Easter Sunday. As the sun set in baffled light through the maple trees in the late afternoon, a song rang in my head. Leaving my house, through the back door, I felt strangely compelled to sit on my front steps. This is something I never do. At first. I couldn't place a song that I began to hear. It echoed in my mind. A Christmas tune? A Christmas song in April? It was the Christmas carol "Oh come all ye faithful" repeated over and over in my mind.

Four or five feet up in the air above the front garden suddenly appeared an undeniable figure of a man in dazzling light. A man's figure floating in light! I couldn't shake it. Aware that it might mean something psychically, I frowned into the light, puzzled. A tidal wave of encompassing warmth washed over me. Love, peace, and serenity overwhelmed me. Bliss radiated from this figure of light.

Later, I recalled my previous special request, and remembered that it was, indeed, Easter Sunday. I recalled my plea to Easter Lily to assist me. I had heard the song about Christ, had seen the figure of light, and had experienced bliss and rapture. I had observed what I realized later was the Christ-light.

Since then I care little for any didactic about Jesus the man. I hum that song when I need reminding of the miracle sighting that I apparently had.

Hi Paul,

Thank you for the comment and sharing your story here, I remember when you shared this once before.

We certainly have a different view of Jesus and of the spirit world.  According to the bible, we are not to pray to the "spirit world" nor light candles to or for those who have passed on.  Jesus is God, and while on earth, definitely 100% man and in that we have much to learn from Jesus the man.

I am not sure what you mean exactly by "Christ-light" , maybe you could expand on this for me. By your experience, are you saying you received him as your savior? what exactly do you believe about Jesus and the Christ light.

Thank you again for reading and commenting. I always appreciate input and great discussion. :-)

Pride is bringing America down.   Just as the love of money is the root of all evil, pride is part of that plant.   You say, "...true peace and freedom only happens when we come to the place where we are willing..." and that is exactly what humility is, "willing" to listen and obey Him instead of ourselves - stripped of all pride. Well said. ~louis gander

Hi Louis, I agree - its always been about pride. I believe that's why Pride is listed first on the list of things God despises.  It destroys.  thank you for your input. It is appreciated.  Blessings to you! Teresa

Thank you for outlining what trusting in God entails. As usual my dear sister, you have struck an appropriate chord.

Tis' So Sweet To Trust In Jesus; just to take Him at His word,

Just to rest upon His promise; just to know thus saith the Lord

Chorus: Jesus, Jesus; how I trust Him; how I proved Him oer' and oer',

Jesus, Jesus; precious Jesus; O' for grace to trust Him more

God bless your day Teresa.

Hi Edward, Amen! Taking Him at his word will never lead us astray.  His words are tried and proven.

God bless your day as well!
