Intercessions for the second Sunday of Lent

by Anne Linington(187) Red Star

Lord we remember that following Christ is not always a comfortable place to be.

We remember all those who are insulted or persecuted for their faith.

We pray for those who have the courage to speak out, and for those afraid to do so.

We pray particularly for those in Public Service, in Health and Education.

We thank you for the Archbishop of York and his support for the Christian origins of our own society, and the values held by individuals.

Give us wisdom where we live and work to know the best ways to share our faith, and the grace to respect others who see things differently.

We remember all who work for peace, justice and hope in a fractured world;

For the United Nations, Amnesty International and all relief agencies.

We pray for the countries in the news this week

We ask for those who share the Good News of the Gospel abroad.

We pray too for the women of Papua New Guinea and those who prepared the worship for the Women's World Day of Prayer. Continue to influence this rich and diverse country through your people.

We remember those whose lives are connected to our own;

family members, friends, neighbours and colleagues. We ask your blessing on every family and street represented here. We pray for those whose jobs and homes are threatened by the recession.

We especially pray for.....................

We remember those who battle with disease or pain,

in body.. in mind.. or in spirit.

For those who are confused or depressed. For those whose lives are blighted by addictions.

Bless them and their families, and all the members of the Health professions who treat accident and illness of one kind or another.

Today we pray for........................

We thank you for our emergency services, the Police, Fire, Ambulance and Coastguard. We pray particularly for those who are Christians. May they know your guidance in all their decision-making. Thank you for all they do to preserve life and keep us safe.

We remember all those who are dying,

the old, but also those who die young particularly young men through motor accidents and suicide.

For those able to remain in the security of their homes, for those in hospitals and Hospice and for the Chaplaincy teams; for those who experience fear and loneliness bless them with a certain hope of life in Christ.

Comfort those who mourn the loss of loved ones who have died recently or some time ago and give to them the oil of joy for mourning, and the garment of praise for their spirit of heaviness.

We pray for Governments and individuals concerned with our planet,

its fragile balance and its resources. Helps us to be good stewards of all that you have given us, particularly at this time of

economic recession. For those nations and individuals that have a greater share of the world's wealth and food, enable them and us to share it with our poorer neighbours.

We thank you Lord for all the evidence of new life at this time of year.

As the earth renews itself in the cycle of seasons, so may we be renewed in faith in you.

Eternal Father

Source of all life and light

Whose love extends to all people,

All creatures, all things:

Grant us that reverence for life

Which becomes those who believe in you;

Lest we despise it, degrade it

Or come callously to destroy it.

Rather let us save it

secure it, and sanctify it,

After the example of your Son,

Jesus Christ our Lord.
