In this coming Holy Week we are reminded of things that were or were not torn:
The High Priest who tore his clothes (Mt 26:65)
Our Lord's garment that the soldiers decided not to tear (John 20:24) but cast lots for it
The temple curtain that was torn in two from the top to the bottom.. (Mt 27:5)
The linen cloths in which Christ's body was wrapped, and which were laid aside on his resrrection
NOTE: If appropriate, have a piece of sheet which will easily rip into strips- rip thiswhenever the words "torn apart" occur and wrap the pieces around a wooden cross as we offer these situations to Christ to make whole.

We come to pray for our world which is so often torn apart; for nations and churches; families and individuals; for our planet:
We pray for all nations torn apart by war:
For Iraq and Afghanistan and the men and women in our armed services
For Israel and Palestine, as we pray for the peace of Jerusalem
Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer
We pray for those countries recently torn apart by natural disasters
for Haiti
for Chile
We pray for on-going relief efforts and a rebuilding of the infrastructure, and healing for bodies and minds
Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer
We pray for your Church so often torn apart by division and faction:
We pray for those whose lives have been torn apart by sexual abuse within the Roman Catholic Church
We pray that historical divides may be healed, and that Christ's prayer “that they may be one” will be an increasing reality
We continue to pray for our new Bishop, Christopher and for the on-going process of appointing a Vicar for Newport. We ask your strength and blessing for Caroline our Archdeacon, and for all who minister in our churches of St. John's and the Minster.
Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer
We pray for our society, torn apart by recession and poor banking practice,
for businesses, manufacturing and farming which have been so hard hit
We pray for the divide between rich and poor to be closed
We pray concerning recent budget decisions by the Isle of Wight Council which affect the most vulnerable in our community- those with Learning difficulties, with mental illness, women in need of refuge.
Help us your people to speak up for those who have no voice.
Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer
We pray for our government and politicians so recently torn apart by financial irregularities
We pray for the forth-coming elections that there will be a restoration of integrity and trust in political life
Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer
We pray for families torn apart by betrayal and infidelity
and the consequences for adults and children within such families
Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer
We pray for the lives of individuals whose lives are torn apart by addiction and substance abuse- including alcohol and drugs
We ask your blessing on the existing Street Pastors in Ryde and those shortly to be commissioned in Newport.
For those whose lives are currently torn apart by illness and grief,we pray for your healing and comfort:
Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer
We pray too for the whole created order torn apart by the greed of the few at cost to the many
We pray for a willingness among nations to work for a more equitable and sustainable future.
Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer
