Intercessions based on Psalm 23
We come in our prayers to God who is a Shepherd to the whole flock, and to individuals:
We pray for each of us to know that assurance that comes from being able to say and know:
“ The Lord is my shepherd ..I shall not want...”
We pray that together as a Church, and individually, we may know your guidance and direction, your provision and protection.
We pray for all those you have called to shepherd your flock- for pastors and ministers, and all members who take care of the sheep.
We pray for those whose task it is to feed the sheep , whether through preaching or writing..
for long hours spent in study, for the loneliness of those who write books that help us to grow as Christians.
We pray for Christian hymn and song writers- those through the centuries like Charles Wesley,
those who have written out of difficult experience when they have proved that you are there...
those in our own day like Graham Kendrick and Stuart Townsend. Bless all whose work it is to lead us to worship God in spirit and in truth.
We pray too for the need to rest and drink from Christ the Living Water
We pray too for those called to walk through valley s of deep darkness. . and those who in Christ's name walk alongside..
Perhaps redundancy or bankruptcy... separation and divorce...illness or bereavement
Be with those Christians who work in our Hospitals.. our Hospices and communities.. as Chaplains as Macmillan Nurses.. and all who work in this sphere of care.. May we and they know the Shepherd who walks these valleys with us, comforting us with his presence.
We pray for protection from all that makes us afraid - physically, mentally and spiritually..
May the certainty of your presence remove our fear and give us peace.
We ask for guidance in any situation where we may stray from your path and will
We pray for our forth-coming General election, the Hustings on Wednesday in Newport, and the candidates for an Island MP..
We thank you for the privilege and responsibility of a democratic society where people have equal value but not equal opportunity...
We pray that the rich will help the poor... the educated help those less educated...the strong help the weak
Bless us with the anointing of your Holy Spirit in all that we do.. in our actions..our words ... our thoughts... our dreams.. that our cup may truly overflow with your blessing.
And give to us the certainty that we will dwell in the House of the Lord forever.
O thou, from whom to be turned is to fall
to whom to be turned is to rise
and in whom to stand is to abide forever;
Grant us in all our duties thy help
in all our perplexities thy guidance
in all our dangers thy protection
and in all our sorrows thy peace;
through Jesus Christ our Lord
St Augustine (354-430)
