What Are God's Emotional Attributes?
by Efoghor Joseph Ezie(11)jossyhealth
God has emotional attributes which he exhibits from time to time; which shows that he lives and understands. He is not like the other gods which have hands but cannot lift; eyes but cannot see, ears but cannot ear, nose but cannot smell, etc. His ability to express emotion is one of those attributes that we took after him.
What emotions does he show?
1. He is compassionate: God is able to feel our pains, understand our sufferings, and sympathize with us. He is always willing to help us when we pass through harrowing experiences or when we are emotionally disturbed. We saw in his word how he sympathized with the people of Israel during their suffering in Egypt, and how he eventually stepped in to deliver them from their slavery.
2. He hates: God hates, but not as man does. He hates only wickedness or workers of iniquity; he hates injustice, oppression, lying, wishful sin, etc and he expresses his hatred against such things (Ps.5:5)
3. He grieves: God can be sad when we do things that he does not approve of. When we choose to live a sinful life, he can become sad because of the disappointment we bring to his heart. Gen.6:6 makes us understand that God’s heart was grieved because he made man (and man strayed from his original plan).
4. He is patient: God is so patient; he waits to see us repent from our sin. He does not want us to perish in sin and go to hell fire (2Peter3:9)
5. He loves: God loves more than anyone else. This same love motivated him to offer his son Jesus Christ for our salvation. He is never selfish with his love; he lavishes his love on mankind. He shows us how to truly love unconditionally and sacrificially (Ex.34:6, Jhn.3:16; 1Jhn.4:8-10)
6. He laughs: God laughs when he sees the enemies plot in vain and imagine the impossible against him or against his children, because he knows that they would never succeed to carry out their evil ploys as long as he remains on the throne of heaven (Ps.2:1-4)
7. He is Jealous: God is jealous when it comes to expressing our loyalty or worship; he does not want us to bow down to or worship other gods or graven images. He needs all of our worship and glory; and so he could be very jealous when he sees us trying to give what rightfully belongs to him to other gods (Ex.20:5; Ex.34:14; Josh.23:7)
8. He fears: God fears because of what he feels might happen to us. He does fear anybody and does fear because of the wrong choices we sometimes make. (Deut.32:26-27)
9. God expresses anger: God expresses his anger when he is provoked by man. Some of the ways man could provoke him include through idolatry, murmuring, disobedience, rebellion, etc. (Deut.9:7).
