True Freedom

by Swapna Nanda

What is freedom? It is the absence of strife, conflicts, chaos, fear, poverty, tensions etc. Are we really free?

God teaches the true meaning of freedom in the Bible. He taught the Israelites the true meaning of freedom through various events and disasters. Unfortunately, the Israelites always learned the hard way. And often we also learn the same way.

God used the prophets to reveal His design about real freedom and one instance is found in the book of Habakkuk.

The book begins with the Habakkuk’s complaint against the atrocities, idolatry, injustice, strife, conflict, destruction that was abounding in the society where he lived. Habakkuk questions God’s silence.

Habakkuk also complains questioning God’s power and authority. Perhaps his faith is shaken looking at the apparent triumph of evil against good. Habakkuk’s heart is broken and confused.

But at the end, the complaint is turned into contented statements which we find in Chapter 3: 17-19. He says that though there is no fruit, no sheep, no progress, yet he will rejoice.

The question is how could Habakkuk’s complaint turn into contentment? The circumstances have not changed nor there seems to be any success and yet Habakkuk’s attitude has changed. He seems to be more at inner peace and serenity, a very different mindset than which he had in the beginning of the book. The circumstances have not changed but his perspective has changed.

The answer lies in the beginning of the chapter 3. Habakkuk lifts his gaze from the failure, the hopeless situation, and the negative and focuses his gaze upon God and His Character. Automatically, his complaint changes into a prayer, asking God to renew His fame and deeds. By this affirmation, Habakkuk conveys his trust in the Sovereignty of God. And sure enough God is pleased with a trusting heart. A heart that trusts God and His goodness at all circumstances, at every corner of life, be it plenty or insufficiency, victory or defeat in worldly terms, is a heart that dwells in true freedom. Because freedom is not about being liberal, or lack of restriction; rather the assurance of being secure in the arms of God and His purpose. Trust in God brings deliverance and rest.

Habakkuk understood the secret of true freedom in the midst of strife and trials. He knew that focusing on God alone will give him strength and make his feet like the feet of a deer. Because God alone is the enabler and sustainer and takes us to higher grounds and this is the result of being Free.
