Serving Christ is a privilege. But how many of us understand that? Many times we serve Christ as if we are paid staff in the office or in a company. We just complete our assignments as and when required by our bosses whether we really have the right attitude towards it or not and at the end of the month we receive our pay which makes us feel satisfied.
When Paul writes his letters to Timothy he instructs many things including the matter about “Serving Christ” in its truer sense which will really clear our minds regarding this subject.
Let’s study the passage, 2 Timothy 2:1-7.
In the first two verses Paul instructs Timothy to be strong in the grace of Christ Jesus as the task is huge which is serving in His kingdom (taking care of His church). From verses 3 to 6, Paul talks about the qualities and characters of a servant by using the examples of three very common professionals for our clear understanding, which are discussed as follows:
1. A Soldier (v3 & 4): there are few characters of a solider which is very relevant for us while serving Christ.
a. Enduring Hardship (v.3): we have to go through hardship while serving for our Lord. Serving Christ is not at all easy as assured by the prosperity teachers. We have to go through suffering and hardship like a soldier in the battlefield or border. We all can imagine the pain and suffering a soldier bear in his life time. Sleeping in the open sky, fear of getting killed, running and crawling on dusty, rough, thorny paths, sleepless nights, starving and without water for days are not at all easy. Are we ready to be a good soldier of Christ by enduring hardship?
b. Doesn’t get involved in civilian affairs (v.4a): A soldier never limits himself or never allowed to limit himself to serve the country/government by getting involved in civilian affairs or his household works. We all know the soldiers are always away from their homes for months. It’s more painful. Isn’t it? Are we ready to stay away from our families etc. for His work?
c. Pleasing his Commanding Officer (v. 4b): A soldier does everything to please his commanding officer. Do we please our Jesus while serving Him?
2. An Athlete (V.5): An athlete will be disqualified if he doesn’t compete according to the rules laid for the race. The same way while serving Christ we can not just go our own way but have to follow the rules and instructions given in the Bible. This is really very important to follow the rules while serving because I have seen people in Christian Organizations using wrong means to get the work done for Jesus which is not at all correct and acceptable to our Master. Do we follow His instructions or do according to our wishes?
3. A Farmer (v.6): a farmer receives a good harvest when he does hardworking. In Indian context farmers are so important for us. If they don’t produce crops in a particular year then everything will go out of way in India. If we are lazy in His kingdom then we won’t be fit to work for Him. Jesus chose His disciples who were all busy people in their own professions. Are we hardworking in His vineyard?
Today we need to ponder on this study. Do I really have to give a conclusion to what I shared above from His word? I think v. 7 has already done that for me by saying, ‘’reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this.”
May God bless us to stay afloat as His servants.
