Snotawazzel's Stink Weeds

by Cheery Blossom(29)

This is a true, but perhaps not perfectly accurate story, as it happened during the time that my mother was several miles from home, giving birth to me.

This was a family story, passed down through the years.

My brother, Gaylord, was about 5 years old, and my sister, Myrna was nearly 15. My brother Onas, was 17.

Myrna had the responsibility of caring for the home while mother was gone.

There was a daily comic that came in the paper each day. It was called “Watasnozzel.” This one comic appealed to 5 year old Gaylord, and he had to know what it said each day, which aggravated the 2 older children, therefore, they sometimes called him “Snotawazzel”

Gaylord had a little “red flyer” wagon, and entertained himself quite well around the farm.

One day, Gaylord picked his little wagon full of lamb’s quarter leaves, and proudly brought them to Myrna, and wanted her to cook them for dinner.

She refused, saying, “Those are weeds, and I am not cooking weeds for dinner.”

When Dad came home for dinner, he asked, “What is this? as he viewed the somewhat wilted lambs quarter weeds.

Myrna said, “That is Snotowazzel’s stink weeds, and he wanted me to cook them for dinner, and I’m not going to cook weeds!”

Dad assured her that Mother did cook them and they were very much like spinach.

Myrna did clean and cook them for supper, but refused to eat any of “Snotowazzel’s stink weeds.”

Of course, Gaylord thought they were the best thing that she had ever cooked!
