Discussion Questions - John 3:1-21 Part One: Nicodemus, Signs, and Sovereignty

by Teresa(1,656) Bronze Star
Freelance writer/Speaker

The doctrinal truths Jesus taught in this portion of Scripture reveal the condition of mankind and the sovereignty of God. Additionally, we see the heart of Jesus in how he responds to the curious and inquisitive soul.

These truths are too important to glance over; thus the two part discussion. In part one we will do a light study on Nicodemus and the Pharisees, then cover the signs in Chapters 1-3:21. Lastly, we will discuss the heart of Jesus and the Sovereignty of God. An in-depth discussion of the "why" of being born again will follow in part 2.

NICODEMUS

Read Matthew 12:1-14; Luke 11:31-53; John 7:50-51; John 19:38-42

1) Do you think Nicodemus was embarrassed, fearful, or both. Why?

2) Have you ever been, or are you currently in a similar situation? Do you "seek Jesus at night"?

3) What was it that gave Nicodemus the courage to question Jesus?

4) Do you think Nicodemus believed and therefore, "born again"? Explain your reasoning.

5) What was it, or is it that is causing you to question Jesus? Have you been born again? Is there visible evidence?

6) Was Jesus receptive to those who came to him in secret? How does this encourage you?

SIGNS

Read John 1-3

1) Up until this point, what signs have been revealed, either by Jesus or John the Baptist.

2) What signs have you seen in your own life or the lives of those around you that reveal "Jesus has come from God"?

SOVEREIGNTY: Grace and Truth

Reread John 1-3; Numbers 21:4-8 (Read Exodus 14-17 if further background is needed on the actions of the Israelites.)

1) What is Jesus referring to when he compares himself to the serpent being lifted up in the desert? How does this relate to the theme of belief and the consequences of non-belief?

2) What are the similarities in these two portions of Scripture?

3) What qualities and characteristics are defined or implied about Jesus? List as many as you can find. Does this challenge or encourage you?

4) In what ways are you like the Israelites of old? Is your belief conditional?

CHALLENGE

Reread John 1-3, and all of the passages mention thus far throughout this entire study.

1) What have you learned about yourself - is your faith your own?

2) Rewrite John 1-3 in your own words. What has this revealed about your love and knowledge of Jesus?

3) Note any new questions that come up as a result of this excercise. Share them with the group, and or write them out in the form of a prayer. Continue to study and be expectant of your answers as you continually surrender to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Please share your thoughts. May God richly bless you!
