Sin Loves Company

Hab 2:15-16 “Woe to him who makes his neighbors drink—you pour out your wrath and make them drunk, in order to gaze at their nakedness! You will have your fill of shame instead of glory. Drink, yourself, and show your uncircumcision! The cup in the Lord's right hand will come around to you, and utter shame will come upon your glory!

This passage begins with a clear moral statement: it is wrong to drag those around you into your sin. In this case the sin of Babylon is conquest for pleasure. Throughout scripture wrath is often personified as a strong liquor. The one who carries out the wrath is portrayed as one having or giving the liquor and the victim is portrayed as one who drinks. This is an appropriate metaphor first because strong drink comes from fruit and fruit represents the outcome of human action. It is also appropriate because one who drinks is dazed, confused, and fallen – just like a people who is conquered under the wrath of their enemy. Immediately following the statement of moral clarity there is a judgment against the guilty. The day comes when you cannot hide from the things you’ve done. Just as Babylon visits wrath upon Judah, wrath will eventually be visited upon Babylon. In the end the conqueror will be conquered. The Lord will ensure this happens and that evil people once glorious will know shame.
