In John 5:1-17, we get a glimpse of several important themes; three of which will be explored today - The Sheep Gate, healing on the Sabbath, and sin.
If you haven't read the Summary, please do so here.
READ JOHN 5:1-17
THE SHEEP GATE
For a visual and related history of the temples of the Lord, view here.
Read the following passages, and then answer the following questions. (Note: The Sheep Gate is the first and last gate to be mentioned in regard to the rebuilding of the temple during the time of Nehemiah) The command to rebuild the temple signified a return to worship and fellowship with the true and living God. The Sheep Gate is strongly believed to be the gate in which the sheep were led for sacrifice. Keep these things in mind as you answer the questions below.
Nehemiah 3:1, 32; Neh 12; Isaiah 53:7-8; John 1:29-30; John 10:7-9; Revelation 22:13
1) Why do you think the Sheep Gate was the first gate to be restored and the last gate to be mentioned?
2) How does Jesus fit the description of both the gate and the sheep?
3) How does this reinforce all you have learned in chapters 1-4? Summarize the Gospel of Jesus Christ based on this information.
THE SABBATH AND HEALING
Exodus 20:8-10; Hosea 6:6; Matthew 9:1-6; Luke 13:10-17; Mark 3:23-28
1) To what kind of "work" do you think God was referring?
2) What does God value more than sacrifice?
3) What should be mixed with sacrifice?
4) The Pharisees were focused on the religious rules they added to God's simple command to rest. This caused them to be blind to the true work of God. In what ways has your religion carried you away from seeing the real work of God?
GO AND SIN NO MORE
Read the following passages, and then answer the following questions.
John 5:14; John 8:10-11; 1John 1:1-2:6; 1 Corinthians 6:9-20
1) What does it mean to be healed physically and spiritually (How does one stay "healed"?)
2) Are you truly a Christian or are you lying? What is the evidence?
3) If we chose to be healed, what is our responsiblity?
4) Why does God supply a means of forgiveness? In what ways do you take advantage of this?
5) If we continually and willfully sin, is there forgiveness?
6) Take inventory of your Christianity - in what areas are you lacking? Have you truly sought healing and forgiveness?
7) Based on all we have learned thus far, can you honestly say you are a Christian? What is the evidence?
As always, there is much more to discuss. Please share your thoughts.
Father,
Show us our need, expose our religiosity and cleanse us. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
Has this lesson exposed false Christianity in your life? Get right with God. Repent and receive Christ as your Savior today. Respond with a "YES" as Jesus asks you if you want to be made well.
