How Well Do We Know God?

by Brian Farrell(235) Red Star

I have written for him
the great things of My law,
But they were considered
a strange thing.
(Hosea 8:12)

Jesus answered and said unto them, "Ye do err, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God." (Matthew 22:29)

Jesus promised to send us the Holy Spirit to guide us, comfort us and to teach us. We can know what God is speaking to us and we can understand His Word. Jesus promised,

"I am with you always, even to the end of the age (Mt. 28:20)."

How well do we know God's Word? Is His Word the standard that we live by? Do we seek God daily and do we spend time with Him in our Bibles? Do we consult His holy precepts for direction and wisdom before we make decisions? Is His Way our way? Do we live the way we do because of our culture and upbringing or because God's Word has changed us or is changing us? Do we know God? Do we know what He desires for us? Are we in err, not knowing and understanding His heart? Is His Word a strange thing to us?

The writer to the Hebrews exhorts us:

Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away (Hebrews 2:1).

'Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,' Says the LORD of hosts (Zech. 4:6).

Great questions that we must continually ask ourselves. As paul says, examine ourselves to see whether we are in the faith. Shine, Jesus shine - set our hearts on fire! Blaze Spirit blaze.... And may we be honest with our answers and do something about it! Blessings! Teresa

The Bible is awe-inspiring. It is the key for believers at this time in history. I think the cause of the last days apostasy spoken of so often in the NT is the twisting and outright abandonment of the Scriptures. This seems to be a dividing line in the outward church today, but not for the true church! Thanks for your comments.

Hello Brian, Interesting question(s). Most Christians think that they know God, but do we really? Matt 7 Jesus tells us that many will say, haven't we done this or that in your name?, and Jesus' response is, depart from me I never knew you. So what is it to know God? One verse speaks volumes: Jer 22:16 the Lord is speaking to King Josiah's son about his dad and says, "He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then it was well with him: was not this to know me saith the Lord?" It goes hand in hand with Matt 25:31-ff, where people are divided as sheep and goats are divided. The righteous on the Lord's right hand are righteous because they clothed and fed others, they housed strangers, visited prisoners, etc... The unrighteous are those that didn't do these things. I think it is easy for people to go to church and go through the motions and think they are all right. I think to really know God is to show Him to others through the things that we do (I'm not talking about salvation, only in having an intimate relationship with the Lord). Communion (the Lord's table) is another way to know God. The bread in the OT is called the bread of presence (God's presence). The word for Communion (Koinonia in the Gk), means intimate fellowship. God really wants us to know Him. And of course, as you mentioned in the great questions you asked, we need to be in His Word to know Him, for it is His Word that reveals Him to us. Thanks so much Brian for the article, and for making me think. I really want to know our Lord better. Blessings!

Thanks, Bart. The Lord really spoke to me on this and just dropped this in my lap while I was reading through Hosea. It is one that is causing me to really take a close look at myself and an even closer look at His Word! Lord bless, bro!
