Journeying
Lord God,
You have called your servants
to ventures of which we cannot see the ending,
by paths as yet untrodden,
through perils yet unknown.
Give us faith to go out with good courage,
not knowing where we go,
but only that your hand is leading us
and your love supporting us;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

A journeying People
As people of faith- and in particular, of Christian faith, we follow centuries of Judeao/ Christian heritage of people who “journeyed”
Abraham- in faith, left his country and followed God even though he didn't know where he was going (Genesis 12 and Hebrews 11: 8)
Moses lead the people of Israel out of Egypt on a journey, which because of their moaning and rebellion took forty years, and only two of the original number entered the “Promised land”.
The Jews failure to repent and return to God led to their exile in Babylon, taking them on a journey far from their home.
Jesus: Birth narratives feature a lot of journeys: Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem; the shepherds to the stable; the wise men following a star from the east; Mary and Joseph travelling to Egypt to protect Jesus, and later returning to Nazareth.
Passover- involved Jews journeying to Jerusalem, for Jesus and his family, Jesus and his disciples and later on the first Pentecost described in Acts.
Jesus journeyed throughout Galilee meeting people like the woman of Samaria, Nicodemus and Zacchaeus as he travelled. , knowing that eventually he must travel to Jerusalem, to certain arrest and death.
Probably the greatest “journey” of all, made by the Son of God, was in leaving Heaven to be born as a baby “incarnating” God on earth. But he went down even further, to Hades itself, before his resurrection and ascension back to heaven at the right hand of God.
In Acts, the first apostles “journeyed” - Philip met the Ethiopian Eunuch on the desert road; Paul and his companions travelled throughout Asia Minor, and eventually on to Rome to preach the Gospel as the Apostle to the Gentiles.
Earlier Christians were dispersed by persecution, and John finds himself on Patmos where he receives the “Revelation”.
Since that first century, apostles and saints, missionaries and evangelists have travelled to preach the Gospel throughout the world, and we may have done so ourselves or have friends and family..
like my niece Sarah recently back from six months in Brazil with the Baptist Missionary Society.

Poem: Uncharted Territory
This new voyage on which you have begun
Is taking you into, as yet, uncharted territory.
It is a journey not ’cross distant seas,
Nor to foreign lands, but to deep within your self.
It is a time, during which you will discover hidden depths,
And strength you could never believe you possessed
On it you will make new friendships and deepen old.
You will discover new loves, new joys and new life.
Things you may once have taken for granted
Will become so very precious
Like jewels mined from deep within earth’s darkness.
Supported by loved ones near and far
You are strong enough for this your own odyssey
So go with fortitude to reach your appointed destination
that is you.
Poem An Open Door
You set before me an open door
Which may so easily have been closed,
Taking me from the constriction of limited prospects
To the broad expanse of possibilities and adventure.
With your leading I step out into new worlds
Press on towards distant horizons
Knowing that behind even the blackest of clouds
The sun of your love still shines.
Imbue me with your vision, your hope,
Your confidence in all that can be achieved,
By simply being willing to step forward
Into something new.
Song 215 I heard the voice of Jesus say
804 I lift my eyes to the quiet hills
The Walk
It started as a journey.
Walked in despair,
and fear.
Soaked in confusion.
Hope destroyed.
Then he joined us,
the stranger,
He'd been away,
didn't know
the light had gone.
And as we talked
we saw the
pieces fit together,
our hearts were warmed.
Hope returned.
“Stay with us,”We said,
and sat to eat.
He blessed the bread
and broke it.
Then we knew!
And now another journey
Back to where we'd left
filled with hope
and joy and understanding
“We have seen the Lord!”
Song 1120 Will you come and follow me
Blessing
May the road rise to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine warmly upon your face
the rains fall softly upon your fields and until we meet again
May God hold you in the hollow of his hand
