Read John 5:31-47
At the start of this study through John, I mentioned that we would be faced with a challenge; Is Jesus the Son of God or is He a liar and a lunatic. There is no in between. It's understandable how non-believers would reject the idea of Jesus being God in the flesh, and the only way to Heaven. Sadly enough, this is also true among many professed Christians - how can this be?
Perhaps it's because they have been swayed by deceiving spirits, or perhaps its for lack of knowledge. For this reason, instead of having the normal discussion questions, it seems beneficial at this point to search the Scriptures regarding Jesus' claim to be the Son of God and God as His witness.
Read the following passages - what is being said, and who is doing the talking?
1) Matthew 3:13-17:
2) Matthew 7:21-23:
3) Mathew 16:24-27:
4) Matthew 26:59-64
5) Luke 9:28-36:
6) John 5:16-47 (make a list of everything Jesus says about himself and his father)
7) John 14:6
8) Revelation 1:8, 17
9) Revelation 22:12-16
Who did Jesus profess to be? What claims did he make? We have a choice to make, do we believe his words? Some say they believe His ideals and teachings, but we cannot have it both ways. We can't believe bits and pieces of the Bible. It is all true or it is all a lie.
These are but 9 Scriptures. I purposely left out the ones to come in future chapters of John. Jesus up through chapter 5 was just getting started. Each chapter from this point on will provide further evidence of His claims and the only way to salvation.
We don't have to believe it. We have the right to reject it. However, we cannot profess to be a follower of Jesus, and then say he is just one of many ways to God. This is not what Jesus taught; Christians got their name by those who saw evidence of one who walked and talked as Jesus did. These "Christians" did not compromise the truth.
One last question: Why call ourselves a Christian if we don't believe the very words of Jesus and obey His commands?
Please share your thoughts with us.

AMEN - HE either IS or he isn't.... my Dad never believed that satan existed and could never answer my question about why, then, Jesus lied.... he said that Jesus was just putting things in terms the people of that day could understand.... we had many dialogs about this....Respond to this comment

Hi MJ!
It's sad to see how one justifies themselve out of believing. Good thing God is patient and continually draws those whom he knows will surrender!
Thanks for your words and all of your support!

Do we ever wonder why Jesus didn't go directly from His baptism to the cross? John declared at the baptism of Jesus, "Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world." This was Jesus' purpose, there was nothing preventing Him from going to the cross to fulfill His purpose, except... He came not only to tell us that He was the Son of God, but spent the three years after His baptism demonstrating it. I love John's Gospel, and all the Gospels really, for they detail the demonstration, as well as the proclamation, of who Jesus is. Awesome Teresa. You're doing a great job with your study on John's Gospel. Blessings! Bart.Respond to this comment

Hi Bart. No, I hadn't! Great point. I appreciate your affirming words! There was another girl in the office who approached me and asked me about Church. I told her about our study. She laughed and said she wondered what we were doing in that room. Anyway, she joined us! Now there are 4 brand new believers who have never read the Bible. God is so good. We are moving slow and sure and the questions they ask out of the questions I pose in the summary and discussion. Its truly a gift to be with them. Today I had a one on one, just so happened that no one else could make it. (I am sure by God's design). We spent the entire time on The Godhead, heaven, hell, great white throne judgement. She was raised Catholic she said, but never heard of most of what we have been talking about. She was facinated. What a treasure! Thank you again for the support and the prayers. I am humbled and in awe of the hunger in this group. One of the gals has been a Christian fo4 5 years, but was "undercover" in Iran. She adds some great insight and for the last 2 years has been able to study the Bible. She was saved in a friends home who had illegal satilite and there was a Christian program. Amazing! Can you tell I am in love with this cozy group?! :=-)
