Discussion Questions John 6:41-70: Eating, Drinking, and Being Drawn by God

Read John 6:41-70

As with all Scripture, when trying to understand confusing or difficult passages of the Bible, we must look at the entire context of the issue being discussed. Such is the case for this particular issue of eating the body and drinking the blood of Jesus.

From John chapter one through chapter six (And the whole of John), the central theme is belief in Jesus Christ as God in the flesh, the Savior of the world. Jesus continuously spoke of the requirements for eternal life.Read John 6:30-70. Take note of how many times Jesus used the word believe. Remember that Jesus spoke to the physical and spiritual. Being that he had just concluded feeding 5000 people, it would fit that he would follow suit with feeding the people spiritually. It is also important that we do not connect this portion of Scripture with the Last supper, as they are two entirely different issues and putting the two together would be taking each theme out of its context.

• He's eating up all of the attention from the girls - etc.

We all use eating and drinking metaphorically in our everyday slang. And so did our Lord Jesus.

Keep these things in mind as you read the following passages of Scripture:

Psalm 34:8; Matthew 4:1-4; Matthew 5:6; John 4:4; John 5:25; John 10:9; Ephesians 5:18

1) What is the common theme of these passages?

2) What brings about everlasting life?

Read John 6:63

1) Who is it that gives life?

2) What does Jesus say about the flesh?

Summarize your conclusion - How does Jesus define/build upon true belief?

WHOM DOES THE FATHER DRAW

"Do not murmur among yourselves. No one can come to Me unless the Father draw Him" John 6:44

The question arises: "Whom does the Father draw - does He pick and choose who goes to heaven and who does not? It's a fair question.

Read the following passages of Scripture, and then answer the following questions.

Isaiah 11:10; Joel 2:32; John 3:16; John 12:32; 1 Peter 3:9; Romans 8:29; Romans chapter 10

1) Who does God draw?

2) Who are those who receive salvation?

According to the foreknowledge of God, he know who will choose him and who will reject him.

Challenge:

Use your concordance to search the words "Predestine/d" and "Salvation"

Note the contextual uses of the words.

At any point do you see where it is taught that people are predestined for salvation?

Keep praying...keep growing!

Hi,Mija I want to comment on Jn. 5:29 first The work of God is to believe in Jesus to have faith in/on him.Faith is a work,a spiritual work an exercise of faith.God has dealt to every man the measure of faith(rom's12:3f)the faith that he or she needs to believe. The first step of faith we take is to repent and ask Jesus to save us. Also in 1Thes.1:3a we read remembering without ceasing your work of faith .IN 2Thes.1:3c we read because that your faith groweth exceedingly. So our faith should grow if we exercise or faith, for we walk by faith not by sight,a spiritual walk(exercise). Now question #2 How does God draw men.Jesus said If I be lefted up I will drew all men unto Me(Jn12:32),he lighteth every man that cometh into the world(Jn1:9),that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man(Heb.2:9),who will have all men to be saved(1tim.2:4)  For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hat appeared to all men.(Tit.2:11) Sounds like God predestinate every man,but God gave man a free-will to make a choice. How does GOD draw men by the gosple of the cross, the power of GOD,GOD was in CHRIST reconciling the world unto HIMSELF.

Thanks Dad! I appreciate your adding these Scriptures. We can never have enough perspectives and passages that come up with different people, it shows us that truly, the word of God is alive! We must constantly be open to learning. We've talked before, our positions change as our knowledge increases in the Word.
