Against Ethiopia

Zeph 2:12 You also, O Cushites, shall be slain by my sword. The term rendered “Cushites” in some translations is translated “Ethiopians” in others. Cush was a son of Ham, grandson of Noah (Gen 10:6). The area south of Egypt where Ethiopia now exists is associated with Cush. Nimrod was the son of Cush. Although Nimrod is associated with Babylon, the reference to Cushites may mean that those of great strength will fall before the Lord. Since Ethiopia lies so far to the south, if nothing else this short prophecy is a third compass point.

Against Assyria

Zeph 2:13-15 And he will stretch out his hand against the north and destroy Assyria, and he will make Nineveh a desolation, a dry waste like the desert. Herds shall lie down in her midst, all kinds of beasts; even the owl and the hedgehog shall lodge in her capitals; a voice shall hoot in the window; devastation will be on the threshold; for her cedar work will be laid bare. This is the exultant city that lived securely, that said in her heart, “I am, and there is no one else.” What a desolation she has become, a lair for wild beasts! Everyone who passes by her hisses and shakes his fist. To the north of Jerusalem lay Assyria and its capitol, Nineveh. The predicted fall of Assyria occurred in 612 BC when the forces of Nebuchadnezzar destroyed Nineveh. The ruins of this ancient city have been discovered near modern Mosul, Iraq. The area today is very much like the description given here. Once again we see God’s character revealed in 2:15 where we see the proud condemned for believing their own glory exceeds that of God. We also see that in the end God and His people are ultimately vindicated in every direction.
