Discussion Questions John 7:1-31: Trials, Tribulation, and God's Timing

Read John 7:1-31

There are several points in this portion of Scripture that take on lessons of their own; for this discussion, however, the focus will be God's Timing.

So many of us are struggling today - and not just financially. This has brought discouragement so many people; including people of faith. Just yesterday, I was talking with a new believer about this issue. Why is it that Christians are surprised and discouragement when hardship comes their way? Perhaps its because there is a false sense of security in that they feel God will protect them from hardship because they believe and because they are doing good deeds. Nothing could be further from the truth.  Christians are not immune to the sufferings of life in a fallen world.

It is with this in mind, that will we explore the thought of God's Timing.

We can understand from all the beginning of the book of John through chapter 7, that everything Jesus did is a result of the will of his Father. The following passages of Scripture will remind us that the Father is the author of time, and we as his children are affected and perfected in it. One question will remain - will we use our time wisely?

"To everything there is a season. A time for every purpose under heaven." Ecclesiastes 3:1

Read the following passages of Scripture, and then answer the questions below.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, 11; Genesis 18:10-14; Genesis 21:2; Exodus 9:5; Daniel 8:19.

1) List everything these passages say happens in time. (exp. warnings, promises, fulfillment)

Read the following passages, and then answer the questions below.

John 16:33; Acts 14:22; Romans 5:3; Romans 8:35; 2 Corinthians 1:4; 2 Thessalonians 1:4; Romans 8:18-28

1) What did Jesus say about tribulation?

2) How do these passages explain Ecclesiastes 3:1-11?

3) What is the purpose of tribulation?

Personal Application:

1) What are you going through right now?

2) Has it caused you to doubt God's love for you?

3) How do these few passages encourage you?

Read the following passages, and then answer the questions below.

John 7:6-25; Ephesians 5:15-17; Colossians 4:2-6; Galatians 6:9

1) What example did Jesus give us in "redeeming" (or using his time wisely), while waiting for His Time (death and resurrection) to come?

2) Are we excused from doing good, or from sharing the love of God with others if we are having difficult times?

CHALLENGE:

Read John 1-7:31 straight through. Combined with all the passages noted in this lesson, answer this question for yourself:

"For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us" Romans 8:18

As mentioned at the beginning, there are many subjects to be explored from this portion of Scripture.  What comes to mind for you? Please share your thoughts and or questions with us.

Blessings to you as you continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.
