Zeph 3:16-17 On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: “Fear not, O Zion; let not your hands grow weak. The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.
In this passage believers are called to persevere and remain strong. We are also promised that God who saves will be in our midst. He will rejoice, He will bring peace, He will love, and He will even sing. We should not forget that God is Creator. He made the universe and all life. He made the first humans and He talked to them in the garden. Although man sinned and suffered a very real sort of separation from God, He never left humanity.
We know God was with the patriarchs like Enoch and Noah and Abraham. We know God was with Moses and the Israelites. God was with the judges, kings like David, and the prophets. The reminder to remain steadfast was not new in Zephaniah’s day so it certainly is not new to us. The promise of God being with us is not new either, though we have a different perspective on this phrase since God was with us in the form of Jesus Christ. New Testament writers encourage us to remain faithful in spite of a hostile world around us.
“On that day” once again draws us to look for a Messianic or apocalyptic meaning to these specific promises of salvation, joy, love and God being in our midst. Isaiah 7:14 is a prophecy of “God with us” which, as an angel of the Lord explained to Joseph (Mt 1:23), was a reference Jesus.
