Read John 7:32-52

Click here if you haven't read the summary portion of this study.

In this portion of Scripture, we see two forms of questioning; sincere - out of lack of knowledge, and pretentious - designed to create doubt. There are many reasons why God had His word written and preserved. We not only need it for instruction, we need it for confirmation. This will be our focus for this discussion.

"The secret things belong to the LORD our GOD, but those things which are revealed belong to us and our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law." Deuteronomy 29:29

"Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. Therefore many of the believed..." Acts 17:12a

Christianity is not a blind faith as some suggest. It is a Faith entered into with a certain degree of belief/knowledge with intent to have our faith increase as our knowledge increases.

"But also for this reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith, virtue, to virtue, knowledge." 2 Peter 1:5

Back to John 7:32-52

During this time, the only Bible available was the Old Testament. With this in mind, we are going to "search the Scriptures" to confirm the claims Jesus had made to this point.

The question: "Will the Christ come from the town of Bethlehem (City of David)?" vs 40-43

The statement: "Search and look, for no prophet has arisen out of Galilee." vs 52

Read the following passages of Scripture, and then answer the questions below.

Isaiah 7:13-14; Isaiah 9:1-6 ; 2 Kings 13:24; 14:25 (Gath-Hepher is in Galilee, north of Nazareth.)

1) To whom is Isaiah referring?

2) Who is from Gath-Hepher?

Use your concordance to research the following prophets. Note where they come from, and the Scripture reference/s in which you found your answer. Also note the subject of their prophetic words.

1) Nahum

2) Elijah

3) Jonah

4) Look up all Old Testament references to the Messiah (The book of Isaiah is a great starting point.)

4) Jonah

If you don't have a concordance in your Bible, click here to use Blue Letter Bible.

PERSONAL APPLICATION

Combining all of this information, how does the information you found conflict with what the statement of the Pharisees?

How does this encourage you to continue to study God's word?

How has this study thus far increased your faith and knowledge?

Compare the first seven chapters of John with the Old Testament references you researched regarding the Messiah.  How does Jesus fit this description? (Read Matthew chapters 1-3 for additional information.)

I agree.  I love what I am reading.  We are in a time were we will see more and more of God's word full-filled and I am grateful for a place that we can share together and encourage one another to remain true to our Lord, and pray for one another that we do not follow the "teaching for itching ears", were we would begin to believe the lie.  We need to Holy Spirit now more than ever before, in my opinion.  Blessings to you! T
