Salvation and Glory

Zeph 3:19 Behold, at that time I will deal with all your oppressors. And I will save the lame and gather the outcast, and I will change their shame into praise and renown in all the earth.

“That time” is a time of restoration. We have already seen it is a time of gathering of believers and removal of evil. It is a time of human humility and God’s glorious joy.

This passage should serve as a sobering reminder that evil will be dealt with. In particular those who oppress. An oppressor is a person who puts himself/herself in a position superior to another person. Blessed are the meek and humble, but the rich shall be made low (Jas 2:1-9).

When Zephaniah gives God’s promise to save the lame and gather the outcast the name Jesus leaps out as if it were written here. There are various examples of Jesus healing the lame in the gospel accounts. It is important to note, though, that he not only healed their bodies but he also healed their broken hearts. These were people cast aside by society. A perfect example is John’s account of Jesus healing a man at the pool of Bethesda (Jn 5:1-17). This pitiful soul was taken from shame to glory in the few moments of his encounter with Christ. As a result this man went forth as a witness of Christ (Jn 5:15).
