Response: I was hungry

and you gave me something to eat

Dear Lord, we pray for all this night who hunger for physical food.

For those families and individuals in our country below the poverty line

For those anxious about winter fuel bills who may be tempted to cut back on food.

We thank you for the Food Bank initiatives enabling emergency food needs to be met.

We pray for the people of East Africa and other nations and their ongoing struggle with drought and poor harvests.

We pray for countries where there are vast inequalities between the rich and poor.

I was hungry

and you gave me something to eat

We pray for those who hunger for companionship, those new to our community

those living alone, those in residential and nursing homes.

I was hungry

and you gave me something to eat

We pray for those who hunger for life's basic necessities- clothing, employment

remembering especially the long-term unemployed, those leaving colleges and universities,

those with disabilities that make finding work difficult.

I was hungry

and you gave me something to eat

We pray for those hungry for human compassion and love-

those in our hospitals and hospices, both young and old.

Those in our prisons who long for self respect.

We pray for chaplains & visitors, and ministries like the Prison Fellowship,

their Sycamore Tree initiative, and Changing Tunes with its Music workshops.

I was hungry

and you gave me something to eat

We pray for those who hunger for forgiveness, who wish they could turn back the clock,

and pray that they may find forgiveness through Christ who died for them

I was hungry

and you gave me something to eat

We pray too for those who hunger for justice

those who feel betrayed by our justice system-

for victims

and those who are innocent.

We pray especially for those prisoners of conscience worldwide,

and for the work of Christian Solidarity Worldwide, Open Doors, and Amnesty International.

I was hungry

and you gave me something to eat

We pray for those who hunger for the Bread of Life, Jesus Christ himself.

We pray that you will increase that hunger in our country, in our churches,

and in our own lives.

You have said that those who hunger and thirst for righteousness will be satisfied.

We pray particularly for those countries where Christians hunger for the Word of God in their language. This Christmas we pray especially for the Bible Society's appeal for Bibles for China.

Lord we generally have several copies of the Bible in our homes;

Increase our own hunger to read your written word.

I was hungry

and you gave me something to eat

We pray for those who hunger for peace at the end of their lives

praying that they will have the assurance of eternal life,

peace with God through faith in his Son.

Accept these prayers

for the sake of your Son,

Our Saviour, Jesus Christ.
