Hag 1:7-8 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: Consider your ways. Go up to the hills and bring wood and build the house, that I may take pleasure in it and that I may be glorified, says the Lord.

Christianity tends to extol faith to the exclusion of works. It is true that salvation is by faith (Eph 2:8). It is also true that works are the result of faith (Eph 2:10). Faith without works is dead (Jas 2:17-18). Those who returned in 538 had enough faith to return to their Promised Land and begin the rebuilding project. When opposition came they fought for a while, but eventually gave up. For a full decade they went about their business making the most of the situation. Over time the passion for their purpose faded. They began to forget their faith and their purpose. They even began to intermarry with local heathen girls. In the book of Revelation, Jesus warns the church at Ephesus to remember their first love and to do the works they did at first (Rev 2:4-5). John and Haggai both warned their audience to repent and return to their purposes set forth by God. All too often we let the cares of the world distract us from our faith. It starts small and builds over time. Deception has a way of taking time to grow. The Lord loves His people. We are loved when we are warned to wake up get about the Lord’s business. We are blessed when we listen and act in faith.

Amen! Well said. I just finished reading Ezra, Haggai, and Zacharia all in one sitting, what a gift to know the words of encouragement and admonishment that was going on behind the scenes while the temple was being rebuilt! Very challenging and encouraging! Blessings to you and yours this Thanksgiving and always! T
